How To Budget for a Bathroom or Kitchen Renovation

First things first, how much of your hard-earned savings are you prepared to part with to get your dream space?

Making a budget isn’t as exciting as picking fittings, choosing styles, or pining over Pinterest, we completely agree! But having a starting point (remember it can always be tweaked) is helpful to not only your trades, but it will keep your selections at a realistic level (you don’t want to fall in love with a $9,000 bathtub when your entire bathroom budget is $10,000…

What’s an average bathroom renovation cost? Well, they usually start from $10,000 with the average being about $15,000 – 20,000. Small, cosmetic changes may only set you back $5,000 however premium bathroom renovations can be upwards of $40,000.

There are many factors that will determine your overall renovation budget, these include:

– The fittings you choose (budget or premium)

– The materials you choose (tiles aren’t all created equally)

– The size and structure of the area (size does matter when it comes to price)

– The cost of your tradies

– Relocation costs if required

We think its always a good idea to factor in a 20% buffer in case of:

– Variations (you might change your mind when tapware gets delivered)

– Structural changes (actually, I want the toilet there instead…). These can blow out a budget.

– Demolition and rubbish removal

– Material price increases.

The sooner you have a ball-park budget, the sooner you can get to the fun part, planning!

What Things Should I Consider When Designing a Bathroom or Kitchen Renovation

This is the fun part! It’s where all those hours watching The Block, trawling Pinterest and following Instagram influencers finally pays off!

The best way to work out what you want is to create a mood board; these can be cut and pasted from magazines, creating boards on Pinterest, or saving posts on Instagram.

Make sure you look at colours, trends, fixtures and fittings. Will your style age well? If you sell your home in the next 5 years is your style too unique for most buyers? A traditional, or classic, style would be encouraged if you aren’t in your forever home however if you’re staying put for years to come you have free rein to add lots of pops of colour, dramatic tapware and quirky tiles.

Fit for a Queen….on a Uni student’s budget! One of the problems with creating a vision is not having the budget to match! We’ve all been there…we can’t get a design out of our head that we’ve seen however we find out the price of that design and… it doesn’t reconcile with the bank balance.

Have a think of ways in which you can use basic tapware, tiles etc and find other ways to encompass your style including:

– For Bathroom Renovations; luxe towels and bathmats; using different colours, textures and sizes, and accessories such as art, candles etc.

– For Laundry and Powder Room Renovations; indoor plants; never underestimate how a few leafy plants can make a room feel

– For Kitchen Renovations; Spending $1,000 for a pop of colour from an olive green kitchen aid will be cheaper and easier to change than spending $$$ on olive green tiles for a splashback that will date.

Tips For Planning Your Bathroom or Kitchen Renovation

Structure

Our tradies will need to know a rough idea of your home and area before they can give you a quote.

Is your home single or double storey?

Is your home on a slab or on stumps?

Are your fixtures and appliances staying in the same place or being moved to new locations?

Keeping fixtures in the same ‘footprint’ saves a lot of money as it is less time you are paying for the tradies to change locations/cut concrete etc.

Fixtures And Fittings

Have you got all your fixtures and fittings ordered/delivered? Go into your local Bunnings, Reece, plumbing suppliers, Beacon Lighting etc and see products in the flesh and have a play around with them.

Anything made to order can take weeks or even months so should be ordered well in advance to starting your project.

Always use Australian standard/ Watermark approved products, and only new products/appliances with warranties attached.

Deadline

Do you have a desired end date you would like, or need, the project to be completed by?

Is it before Christmas when your Granny is due to stay? Or is it your investment property you have up for sale so the sooner the better?

Having an expected end date will give your Tradie a deadline that they can either except, decline, or manage the client’s expectation on (this is where the deadlines on The Block don’t do us tradies in the real world many favours!).
