What do I do if my roof is leaking?
- Don’t panic
- Clear the area (move children, pets and important belongings)
- Contain the water (protect floor damage with buckets, towels, bowls)
- Relieve water pressure (if required, poke a hole in any small sagging ceiling bulge only if safe to do so, with a screwdriver, handle etc)
- Make some calls (SES if entire roof collapse, then insurer, then plumber to schedule in investigation and repair when safe to do so)
- Tarp the roof (when the roof is dry, only with appropriate PPE and experience)
How do you prevent damage from roof leaks?
– Keep your gutters, drains and downpipes clear
– Have small leaks, broken roof tiles etc rectified immediately
– Always have home and contents insurance (contents only for renters)
